Internships
An internship is a structured and monitored workplace experience gained through exposure and interactions within a real work environment. The Services SETA funds three types of interships
- Graduates from Higher Education and Training (HET) institutions with full qualifications at NQF level 5 and above
- Learners seeking workplace experience to complete the Nated (N6 only) National Diploma
- Graduates who have achieved a National Certificate Vocational (NCV ) from a Technical, Vocational and Training (TVET) College
Learnerships
A learnership is a work based learning programme that leads to an NQF registered qualification. Learnerships are directly related to an occupation or field of work, for example, electrical engineering, hairdressing or project management.
- Learnerships are managed by Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs).
- They were introduced by government to help skill learners and to prepare them for the workplace.
- Learnership programmes can help you to gain the necessary skills and workplace experience that will open up better employment or self-employment opportunities.

This kind of provisioning is particularly associated with “just in time”, and “just enough” learning to meet a specific need in workplace environments.
Therefore, it is considered a viable and common method for optimal workplace functioning in all contexts and greatly facilitates access to learning in a manageable manner in terms of cost, time, energy and resources, both for the employer and employee.
